Most of the territory of this province is now Portugal. Until the Romans conquered it this territory was home to a number of Ibero-Celtic tribes which had no use for coinage. The Romans established military colonies there, of which Emerita (Merida) - for emeritis, retired veteran soldiers - is the most important.
