The History and Numismatic Output of the Province of Baetica in Spain.

SPAIN, Baetica.

Main mints: Gades, Carteia, Corduba, Hispalis.

The southern part of Spain, this region was under Carthaginian control until the Roman conquest at the end of the Second Punic War. Many of the coastal cities, such as Gades (Cadiz) or Malaca, still retain their ancient names. As maritime cities many issued coinage with marine symbols, especially fishes, and their inscriptions are usually in Punic, as befits their origins.

The Romans conquered the province as a result of the wars against Carthage, and Spanish silver from this region played its role in the vast production of imperial denarii. Other exports gained renown, such as the dancing-girls of Gades, whose performances are noted as more than slightly provocative.
