GAUL, Lugdunum. Lyonnais Gaul was the largest of the three main provinces of Roman Gaul. The administrative center, Lugdunum (Lyon), was situated in the eastern portion of this province. Before Caesars conquests it had been home to several tribes, notably the Senones and Aedui, both of which issued potin coins. Under the Romans Lugdunum became one of the most important mints in the empire. It was the major silver mint in the early empire, and it remained important until the province was overrun in the fifth century. For bronze it issued one of the largest Roman issues, namely that of the Altar of Lugdunum under Augustus and Tiberius.
