The History and Numismatic Output of the Province of Belgica in Gaul.

GAUL, Belgica.

Located in the northern part of Gaul, coins were issued in three distinct areas of Belgica. The southern area, the Seine valley, includes the issues of the Remi and the Suessiones. The Suessiones made a distinctive gold bullet coinage in the II century BC.

In the central area, Picardy, the earliest Belgic coins were made in the late III century BC, based upon the late IV century and early III century gold coins of Tarentum and Syracuse. Later issues looked to the staters of Philip II of Macedon for models.

The northern area extended to the mouth of the Rhine. Here a coinage in gold was made during the II century BC that was a defaced gold coinage of the central area.
