ITALY, Frentani.Major mint: Larinum. The Frentani were an Oscan tribe, whose territory was on the Adriatic in east-central Italy. This tribe was on good terms with the Romans. The city of Larinum issued bronze coins in the third century BC. This city was a center of the wool trade, and seems to have been particularly known for its high crime rate resulting from unrestrained greed; Ciceros speech, Pro Cluentio, gives a (presumably exaggerated) picture of the situation. The coins, all bronzes of the third century BC, feature standard Greek types: Athena / horseman, Zeus Dodonaios / eagle on thunderbolt, and so on. |
