ITALY, Bruttium.Major mints: Kroton, Lokri, Rhegion, Terina; also issues of the Brettian League. Bruttium, modern Calabria - what was then called Calabria s the heel, not the toe of the Italian boot - was an area with few Greek settlements and many natives, which in 356 BC revolted successfully from their Lucanian overlords. They were given the Oscan title Bruttioi, runaway slaves, and were regarded as barbaric and savage. A few Greek cities survived among them, although some were overrun; Terina, for example, was destroyed so thoroughly that today its site is uncertain. Many of the earliest coinage issues of Greek Italy came from these cities. Kroton, for example, whose settlement dates to c. 710 BC, founded colonies such as Terina, and issued its tripod coins. The city was known for its citizens victories in the Olympic Games. The city of Rhegion was a colony of Messana, and hence it issued a number of coins of types similar to the others, including tetradrachms with the Messanan hare. There is some indication that this city was the site of Romes first denarius mint, around 211 BC. Most of the cities sided with Pyrrhos, then with Hannibal, against Rome, and hence paid dearly when the Romans overran the area. Rhegion was one of the few exceptions; it requested a Roman garrison when threatened by Pyrrhos, and held out against Hannibal.
