The History and Numismatic Output of the Province of Islands of Thrace

THRACE, Islands.

Major mints: Imbros, Lemnos, Samothrace, Thasos.

The islands off Thrace were a mixed lot of Greek settlements. Most of them had ancient legends associated with them; Lemnos, for example, had a problem. The women there held Aphrodite in contempt; she returned the favor by giving them a repulsive smell; their husbands therefore deserted them in favor of Thracian captives. The women in turn took offense and killed them, and their fathers as well for good measure.

Most of the coin issued of these islands were small. One of them, Thasos, was the exception. The earlier issues are presumed to be from Thasos; that island had control of rich silver mines, and the coins attributed to Thasos are the most numerous of the early issues from the area. The early coins, from around 530 BC down to the Athenian seizure of the island, show a naked satyr carrying off a nymph. The earlier coins, down to around 450, show the figures in vigorous archaic style: the later ones, in fine classical style. The coins issued in Thasos after the Romans took over are spread tetradrachms, with a head of Dionysos on the obverse, and Herakles standing holding his knobby club on the reverse. This issue was extensively imitated by the Celtic tribes.
