AETOLIA.A region in northwestern Greece, whose settlements consisted of a few coastal towns and various interior tribes living in villages. This region was another area where the people were regarded as only marginally Greek. They also had a more than dubious reputation as pirates The Aitolians banded together in a League from 367 or earlier. Their finest hour came with the invasion of Greece by the Gaulish hordes; they defeated their barbarian enemies through a combination of harassment and more overt attacks. The Aitolians were known for their cavalry, and they at first aided, then opposed, the Romans. All of the coinage struck here was federal, in the third and second centuries BC. Most of the coins have as the reverse type a seated figure of Aitolia, imitating the figure dedicated by them at Delphi following the defeat of the Gauls in 279 BC.
