LOKRIS.Major mints: Opus, Amphissa. In central Greece, this district seems to have at one time been united, but by the time it entered recorded history it was separated. East Lokris, also known as Opuntian Locris, was situated on the mainland coast on the Euboean Gulf. West (Ozolian) Lokris was situated on the Corinthian Gulf, in a position of strategic importance. East Locris was supposedly settled by pre-Greek Leleges; despite all the legends which attach to this widely scattered population, the earliest evidence we have of the Locrians indicates that they were Hellenized early. Their legendary heroes were Patroklos, friend of Achilles, and Ajax the Lesser, son of king Oileos, both well known from the Trojan War. Ajax is typically shown as a warrior with sword and shield on coins of Opus. The city founded one well-known colony, Locri Epizephyrii (i.e., Western Locris) in Bruttium. West Locris was known primarily as a nest of pirates, and extended to Naupactus before the Athenians took the latter. Amphissa issued some coins, mostly in alliance with the Aitolian League; the coins show as their main types a spear-head and jawbone of a boar. |
