The History and Numismatic Output of the Islands of Elis.

ELIS, Islands.

Major mints: Cranion, Ithaca, Zacynthus.

The islands of Elis were much more important for their place in legend than for any specific characteristic. The most notable of these is Ithaca, home of Odysseos, famous from the poetry of Homer as the clever trickster who has all sorts of strange adventures on his way home from the Trojan war, and one or two to try to get out of going to it. Not surprisingly the coinage of Ithaca features Odysseos. The largest of the islands was Zakynthos, dedicated to the cult of Apollo. The legendary founder, Zakynthos, had something to do with serpents, although exactly what is not clear.
