The History and Numismatic Output of the Province of Arkadia.

ARKADIA.

Major mints: Heraea, Megalopolis, Phenos, Stymphalos.

The mountainous region of the central Pelopponese, Arkadia is often found used as an image of a sort of paradise, quite out of keeping with the reality. In fact the territory was something of a no-mans-land, whose only export consisted of mercenary soldiers. In politics they were more or less under the rule of Sparta as subordinate allies. They formed a loose league in the fifth century BC, and a stronger one in the fourth, but they were never sufficiently united to accomplish much of anything.

The Arkadian League issued a series of coins honoring Zeus and Pan, and the Arkadiians issued coinage for the Achaean League as well when they joined it.

Like most places in Greece the towns of Arkadia have stories associated with them. One of the more curious is that about the town of Stymphalos, where the nearby marshes were said to have produced man-eating birds. One of the labors of Herakles was to get rid of this plague; he shot them down with his bow. Herakles is commonly found on coins of this town.
