CYCLADES ISLANDS.Major mints: Keos, Naxos, Siphnos, Syros, Tenos. These islands are located in the Aegean Sea between Greece and Asia Minor. Many were small states ruled from a capital city. The largest of these Cyclades was the island of Naxos, whose settlement and culture goes back to the time of the Cycladic sculpture, in the Bronze Age. It supported the Ionians in their revolt against Persia, for which it paid dear. Its coinage shows the head of the patron deity Dionysos, appropriate symbol of the wine production there. The cities of Keos coined bronzes with the radiate forepart of a dog. Naxos used the head of Dionysus wreathed with ivy. Siphnos coined staters with the head of Artemis. Syros minted silver coins with the head of Demeter. Tenos made their coins with the horned head of Zeus Ammon, and a reverse of Poseidon.
