The History and Numismatic Output of the Province of Colchis.

COLCHIS.

Major mint: Dioskourias.

Colchis is located on the eastern shore of the Black Sea, and according to legend the goal of Jasons search for the golden fleece. The area was a trading center, with its coastal towns serving as frontier trading posts. It had varying fortunes, being alternately a kingdom, subject to Mithradates, then to the Romans. Some place in the region issued small silver coins in the early fourth century BC; these coins are interesting for their archaic style despite the late date, with a head on one side and a bulls head on the other.

Dioskurias, a colony of Miletus, was the main trading port. Its site was at the extreme eastern point of the Black Sea. Strabo relates that it was inhabited by 70 nations, each with its own language. The town minted silver coins with caps of the eponymous Dioscuri at the time of Mithradates. The Romans built a town nearby, called Sebastopolis.
