The History and Numismatic Output of the Province of Aeolis.

AEOLIS.

Major mints: Kyme, Myrinos Temnos.

Aeolis is that portion of northwest Asia Minor from the Dardanelles to the mouth of the Hermus river. Legend has it that the territory was named for Aeolus, son of Hellen (not Helen), the eponymous ancestor of all the Greeks (i. e., Hellenes). The Greek settlers were Beoetians and Thessalians, and were frequently in dispute with their neighbors, the native Mysians.

The most important city was Kyme, founded according to legend by the Amazon of that name; others attributed the founding to Greeks after the Trojan War. The most famous citizen was the father of Hesiod, who emigrated to Beoetia from there. The city also claimed Homer as a citizen; the claim was disputed by others, most notably Smyrna.

Kyme was noted as a colonizer; supposedly Side in Pamphylia was one of the colonies. Most, however, were nearby small towns.
