IONIA, Islands.Major mints: Chios, Samos. Chios, a famous wine-producer and one-time naval power, issued coins with a sphinx and an amphora as the main types. Samos, home to the philosopher Pythagoras, was a place of agricultural fertility, although unlike Chios its wines were at best passable. It had a long history of petty tyrants, and the Athenians long desired to capture it. Samos used on its coins a lions scalp as its type, with an ox on the reverse.
