CYRRHESTICA.Major mints: Beroea, Heiropolis. This district was between Kommagene and Syria proper, west of the Euphrates. Some of its settlements were normal Greek colonies founded by Alexander or the Seleukids; others were ancient Syrian foundations. Beroea was an ancient foundation, originally named Haleb, modern Aleppo, named Beroea by Seleukos Nikator. It issued imperial bronzes with the unexciting type of the city-name in wreath. Heiropolis, on the other hand, is a traditional Syrian foundation, ruled by a dynasty of priest-kings. The chief deity was Atargatis, a form of Astarte, whose hereditary priests were of the family of Abd-Hadad; the Hadad was the same deity whose name appears in the name of Syrian kings in the Bible (e. g., Ben-Hadad). The coins of the city, not surprisingly, have types related to the local cult. Coins relating to the cult persist into imperial times; Syrian tetradrachms of Caracalla, for example, use the lion of Atargatis as a symbol. |
