The History and Numismatic Output of the Province of Chalcidene.

CHALCIDENE.

Major mint: Chalkis ad Belum.

Chalcidene is located east of the Orontes River in modern Syria, not far from Aleppo. Its inhabitants were described by Strabo as wild nomads. Its only significant town was Chalkis, which struck a few bronze coins from Trajan to Verus. The reverses are relatively ordinary, with either a simple wreath or an uncertain standing figure.
