The History and Numismatic Output of the Province of Byzacene.

BYZACENE.

Major mint: Hadrumentum.

District in North Africa, inhabited by Lybian tribes, this area later formed the southeast corner of the Roman province of Africa. It covered the coast south of Carthage, and included a number of small towns. Most were typical Phoenician foundations; the most important was Hadramentum, whose coins use Greek legends. Under the Romans it was the district capital. Another town, Thapsus, was remarkable for the battle here in which Caesar defeated Pompeys forces.
